About William Randolph Hearst & His Iconic Castle
Built over 28 years by Julia Morgan under the direction of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, Hearst Castle is an architectural marvel. Located just 10 minutes from our Cambria hotels, Hearst Castle is a massive melding of historic design styles that Hearst admired during his early travels around Europe. He was a lavish buyer and his collection of art and antiques rivals many museums around the world.
The Castle features 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 sitting rooms, 127 acres of gardens, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, a movie theater, an airfield, and the world's largest private zoo. A variety of exotic animals still roam the grounds, like zebras which can sometimes be seen from Cabrillo Highway!
In its heyday of the 20’s and 30’s, guest invitations to Hearst Castle were highly coveted. Hollywood film stars and politicians visited the Castle often, including Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, the Marx Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, James Stewart, Bob Hope, Calvin Coolidge, Franklin Roosevelt, Dolores Del Rio, and Winston Churchill.
Since 1957, when the Hearst Corporation donated the Castle to the state, visitors have been able to tour the grounds with its impressive collection of art and antiques, remarkable interior and architectural design elements, and breathtaking views.
